In today’s fast-paced world, where reaching one’s full potential can seem overwhelming, it takes a special individual to unlock the secrets of high performance. DJ Perera, a practicing artist and secondary-level art teacher at Boswell High School in Fort Worth, is one such person. However, his impact reaches far beyond the classroom. Let’s delve into DJ Perera’s inspiring journey and discover the remarkable activities that have shaped his career as an artist and mentor.
A Thriving Art Community: Fort Worth’s art community may be relatively smaller compared to neighboring cities like Houston, Austin, and Dallas. However, life’s demands often take precedence, especially for female artists. DJ acknowledges the presence of incredibly talented artists and educators who surpass his own abilities. Yet, what sets him apart is his unwavering commitment to nurturing and guiding the next generation.
Cultivating Opportunity for South Asian Students: As an educator, DJ emphasizes to his South Asian students in America that there are no victims in his classroom. Having experienced his own cultural and financial risks as a foreigner pursuing higher education, DJ overcame various obstacles with language not being one of them. He strives to instill gratitude in his students, reminding them of their fortunate access to abundant resources, even if they come from underprivileged backgrounds. With 99% of his students being U.S. born citizens, DJ works diligently to eradicate complacency and defeatist attitudes, encouraging them to view the world from a different perspective.
The Power of Well-Rounded Education: DJ firmly believes in providing his students with a well-rounded education that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of art. Drawing from his own experiences, he highlights the significance of developing both hard and soft skills. He actively engages in programs such as the New Age Media New Age Learning initiative, sponsored by The 21st Century Grant. This program specifically caters to select secondary school students, predominantly AP and advanced art students, empowering them to pursue art as a profession while maintaining professionalism.
Collaborating with Texas Christian University: In collaboration with Texas Christian University (TCU) and Professor Nick Bontrager, DJ and his handpicked group of students participate in the New Media program. This program offers a distinct curriculum that goes beyond the confines of his regular classroom, providing students with valuable exposure to new media techniques. Through this collaboration, DJ aims to create a transformative learning experience for his students, with the initial year proving to be immensely successful and benefiting all parties involved, primarily the students.
Expanding Horizons through Art: DJ understands the importance of broadening his students’ horizons beyond the traditional art classroom. He provides them with extraordinary opportunities, such as creating murals on a larger scale using sizzle lifts. By offering such experiences, he aims to bridge the gap between their present circumstances and future aspirations. Drawing from his own background as a professional singer, DJ highlights the profound impact that music theory had on his career and how it continues to influence his artistic pursuits. He proudly shares stories of his students who participated in the Namnal program alongside TCU, qualifying for state competitions in ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering).
Empowering Students and Enriching the Community: DJ’s commitment to his students extends beyond the artistic realm. He actively supports and encourages programs that uplift and empower young minds. One notable endeavor is his involvement in a mentor organization called Boss Gentlemen. This initiative focuses on edifying male secondary students in the four C’s—character, competence, compassion, and communication. By offering tailored support and rewards, such as tailored-made suits for seniors and upscale dinners for juniors and seniors, DJ aims to equip them with the tools necessary for success.
